Project Goal + Challenge:
When I Grow Up is a Story about my younger brother, PJ. The book explores some of his many dreams that he has about when he grows up.
I aimed to capture his thoughts through simple and playful illustration, and I wanted this story to be a way to remember and honoring his dreams. Additionally, I included my family in the story to depict my brothers' relationship with them and how he looks up to them.
Keywords:
Illustration, Storytelling, & Childlike Wonder.
Demographics + Visual Inspiration:
I've always been a fan of great illustration, so I looked to books like Calvin & Hobbes to understand children's illustration better. I tried to think like a kid, and I created with that mindset.
The Process:
Ideation, sketch, initial draft, modification & final touches.
I chose to associate each of my family members with a color and used that as the color palette for this story. I elected to use a font that supports the playful theme of the book as well. I spent a lot of time studying my younger brother in order to capture him in the character design and it took many rounds to get to the right place.
Outcomes:
My younger brother absolutely loved the book, and the rest of the family appreciated it as well!
